People are capable of growth, healing, and transformation. Real change happens when communities invest in people—not punishment.
POSTER PLACEHOLDER
When Julius Irving enters a Florida courtroom expecting to be released, a judge’s words both shock and forever shape him. Faced with a system more invested in punishment than transformation, Julius begins a journey that forces him to reimagine freedom, accountability, and healing—not as something institutions provide, but as something people build for themselves and each other.
About the Issue
For generations, communities have been told that punishment creates accountability and safety. Yet incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people are often portrayed as incapable of change, even when they demonstrate leadership, growth, and resilience every day. The consequences—and opportunities—are significant:
Florida has one of the largest prison systems in the country, and while Black Floridians make up approximately 17% of the state's population, they account for nearly 47% of people in prison. [Cite]
Research continues to show that incarceration alone does not address underlying trauma, mental health challenges, or community instability. [Cite]
In contrast, peer mentorship, education, and community-based rehabilitation programs have been shown to improve reentry outcomes and reduce future system involvement. [Cite]
Every day, incarcerated people are creating healing, accountability, and support for one another—even inside institutions built around punishment.
