The Truth Behind the Mask

Realities of Reentry

Realities of Reentry is a short film series that explores the ongoing emotional, psychological, and systemic challenges people face after incarceration—a period too often misunderstood as a clean break rather than a complex, lifelong process. Drawing on lived experience, this series reframes reentry as a profoundly human journey that demands empathy, care, and structural change.

In It’s Not Okay, a powerful spoken word piece unravels the myth of the “perfect” reentry story and reveals how healing isn’t linear; The Truth Behind the Mask unpacks the everyday obstacles—from paperwork to household technology—that make reentry challenging and asks audiences to meet returning citizens with empathy; and The Trauma We Carry follows one survivor’s transformation from pain to purpose as they help others navigate reentry while advocating for trauma-informed justice.

Designed for digital distribution and social engagement, this series elevates system-impacted voices traditionally marginalized in justice discourse, inviting audiences to see beyond stereotypes and toward systems that prioritize healing alongside stability.
